A new take on Alice Walker’s book, The Color Purple, is set to hit the cinemas on December 25th of this year, and it is packed with a star-studded cast.
The cast includes Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, who is still all over the internet for her amazing performance as Ariel in Disney’s new live-action version of The Little Mermaid movie, H.E.R., the multiple grammy winning R&B musician, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Danielle Brooks and some others with Fantasia Barrino starring as the lead who plays Celie Harris Johnson.
The movie also boasts Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones as the producers. The movie synopsis reads:
“A musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel about the life-long struggles of an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s.”
This year’s take on the popular book is not the only adaptation ever made. The first movie adaptation, which goes by the same name, The Color Purple, was made in 1985. That was almost 40 years ago. It doesn’t take away anything from how good this year’s version looks. It would also be important to note that this new reimagined version of the book is a musical, and it will involve Celie going through not just the hardships of being an African-American woman, but also finding her voice, and stepping onto the big stage.
The movie is still a long way out and will release at the end of the year but it is a great one to look forward to.
